In theory, things are presented as easy. A quick look on the internet reveals dozens of platforms for website creation, many of them with free access, lists for a person with no programming knowledge to develop a magnificent site which is personalized, and in just two hours.
In practice, the possibility of a person creating her or his website from home is real, although specific computer skills are needed, and the work is arduous and demanding, requiring much more than just a weekend.
It’s possible that you may find platforms which guide you step-by-step towards reaching your desired site. They allow, for example, the use of a multitude of formats and designs for you to insert text, photos, videos, and even for you to establish an online store.
They will then make available to you free seminars with advice and tutorials for improving the design, content, promotion in social networks, and ranking among the first places in search engines.
But in reality, is such a marvel possible? Creating a website that is visible and effective among the billion sites that exist in the world? It is possible, but it will also depend on factors which demand, among other aspects, much work, research, and knowledge regarding the characteristics of the brand and the objective clients.
Publishing the website
Apart from the web development design project which a beginner businessperson or a great corporation is working on, there has to be a space on the internet for the website to be published “on the cloud.”
The design of the website, its logo, modules, content, images, menus, submenus, content, links, and even with negative spaces, is only part of the process. Afterward, it’s necessary to place them on the web; otherwise, it would be in a sense like having a service of car engineering without a circulation permit, or an island without roads.
A highway is needed for us to reach our destination: web hosting and a domain name. And if bottlenecks are to be avoided (total control over the published website), then some money needs to be paid.
- Hosting: a storage space rented on the web server of a hosting company. The website creator places files in this space, and the web server provides the content to the users that request it. See: What is web hosting?
- Domain name: the sole address (URL) allowing people to find a website on the internet. Domain names are registered for timeframes of one to 10 years, in a domain registry. There is a long list of companies offering hosting and domain names together. See: What is a domain?
Generally, sites such as Wix or Weebly also offer hosting services (from free to very affordable monthly prices), so that you don’t have to be complicated with FTP programs, or upload or download files, or work on everything locally before uploading it to a server, etc.
What about the presence in search engines?
The question comes up once again: Will my website work effectively and attract all those interested in acquiring my services or products?
As may be suspected, taking theory to practice is not as easy as some suggest. The creation of a bountiful website requires research, knowledge, strategy, creativity, hard work, and a good dose of patience.
Once again, we repeat that having a website is not enough. Quality content must be created, the site must be optimized, and time and attention must be dedicated to it, not just once, but every month, adding new content, news, videos, novelties and everything that can help achieve ranking in search engines and to connect with new clients online.
But it can be done. At ZEWS, we help you. Our company has a long track-record in website design, redesign, and maintenance, social network management, the creation of digital content, advising on technology, and the creation of digital strategies.
